Character Profile: Doug (Network Administrator)

Doug is the network administrator for “the cube farm”. He configured the network in a very simple way, and did not include any good security measures such as intrusion detection systems, or even telnet access control. When a problem arises in the network, he procrastinates in fixing it, and does not seem very knowledgeable with network issues and how to fix them. Doug seems more interested in his personal life, and his love interest at work, Aimee. Instead of fixing the network problems, he assumes it is a problem with the internet page and their server (in Bulgaria) and tries to fix a printer with no luck. When asked about the problem, he lies about fixing it.

As the problem gets worse with the internet, and eventually no sites load, Doug finally calls the ISP assuming his T1 connection is down. However, the ISP informs him he is using all his bandwidth and the T1 is up. Doug is naïve and assumes his configuration on the router is the problem instead of checking for security issues.

Doug is a lousy network administrator and would be fired after the CSIT administrators research and solve the problem which has occurred.
