Character Profile: Jason (The Hacker)

Jason is the main hacker of “the cube farm” incident. He is a black hat hacker, which hack into corporations for the sole purpose of exploiting vulnerabilities before they can be secured. In this case, he hacked into the “cube farm” and created a distributed denial of service attack (DDos) where he would use the border router to ping other hackers or companies with large packets. In return, some would attack the border router back, limiting the amount of bandwidth and causing many issues with employees trying to access the internet in “the cube farm”.

Jason is a student in high school, probably in his final year close to graduating. He is very intelligent and easily passes courses such as calculus, and computer science. He finds school very easy and often fakes sick to spend time hacking. He is very computer literate and understands the basics of security and networking, such as flooding interfaces, SSH Shells, ip addressing, DHCP scans and linux OS which he used to effectively hack into the company. He also uses IRC channels to communicate with other hackers.

“The cube farm” company would press criminal charges on Jason for hacking into their network. In both Canada and the United States of America, data interception, data modification, network interference, network sabotage, and unauthorized access are all classified as cyber crimes and all pertain to Jason’s criminal hacking. According to most jurisdictions, the crime must be reported within 90 days in order to meet privacy considerations. Depending on the evidence gathered, Jason could spend anywhere up to 10 years in prison if tried as an adult. However, because he is still in high school, he may be tried as a minor, and may be on probation or fined.
